If Animate is about the new, Mandarake is about the rare. The Akihabara Complex is a towering eight-floor temple of second-hand otaku culture, and for collectors it's often the single most exciting stop in the district. Each floor specializes: vintage figures, doujinshi, retro toys, cels, idol goods, manga, and more. Prices range from pocket-change finds to museum-grade collectibles worth hundreds of thousands of yen.

What to see

The thrill of Mandarake is the hunt. Out-of-print figures, decades-old gashapon, first-edition manga, doujinshi from past Comiket events, and discontinued merchandise all surface here. Glass cases display ultra-rare items like a gallery. Even if you don't buy, the upper floors function as an informal museum of otaku history.

Who it's best for

Intermediate to hardcore fans (level 4–10): rare-item hunters, doujin readers, and vintage collectors. If you only want brand-new merch in shrink-wrap, this isn't your store — head to Animate instead. But if you love the chase, this is paradise.

Practical tips

Why it earns its spot in a trip plan

Mandarake offers something no flagship store can: the possibility of finding an item you thought you'd never see again. For collectors, that serendipity is the whole point of visiting Japan. Budget at least 60–90 minutes — the eight floors reward slow browsing. A smart strategy is to scout Radio Kaikan and Animate first to learn current retail prices, then come to Mandarake to judge whether a second-hand price is a true bargain. Because stock is one-of-a-kind, what you see today may be gone tomorrow, so buy the grail when you find it.
